What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved injectable drug that is commonly used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox contains a substance known as botulinum toxin type A that acts as a neuromodulator. When Botox is injected into different areas of the face, it weakens and temporarily immobilizes facial muscles.

The Benefits of Botox

Doctors use Botox for cosmetic and medical purposes. Botox is beneficial for numerous medical problems. Some of the medical uses include eyelid spasms, excessive sweating, bladder disorders, and chronic migraines.

Botox injections have become the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country. When used cosmetically, the injections reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and give a youthful look to the skin. Botox injections temporarily block nerve signals which help to relax the facial muscles which cause wrinkles.

Botox evens out the wrinkles between eyebrows. The injections also benefit the wrinkles around the eyes known as crow’s feet, horizontal creases in the forehead, lines at the corners of the mouth and chin wrinkles.

What to Expect from Your Botox Treatment

You can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment however you must keep your head up, avoid exercise and rubbing your face for four hours. Regular Botox treatment relaxes the muscles and delays the appearance of fine lines.

Botox treatments are relatively painless and extremely safe when undertaken by a trained professional. You need to inform your doctor about your existing allergies and health conditions and any medication you are taking that can promote bleeding or bruising, i.e. aspirin.

When used for cosmetic purposes it takes only 10-30 minutes. There may be some redness and swelling around the injection site for a small amount of time, but there is no recovery period. Patients should be careful not to rub, massage or apply pressure to the treated area for some time.

Candidates for Botox Injections

People usually start their Botox treatments for cosmetic purposes when they are in their mid-30s. There is no upper age limit for Botox treatments. Botox treatments give a fresh look to even people in their 60s. Botox can also be used in younger patients who are experiencing visible signs of premature aging.
