What are Keloids?

Normally, scar tissue forms within a wound when the skin is damaged. This fibrous tissue helps to protect and repair the wound as it heals over time. In some instances, excess scar tissue forms which can grow outside the limits of the initial injury. These are known as keloids.

Keloids are typically larger than normal scars and slowly develop over the course of several weeks or months and can continue to grow in size for a long period of time. Keloids typically have a pinkish or red color, a raised roundish appearance, and have a different texture and feel than the surrounding tissue. Keloids can form anywhere on the body, but typically form on the:

  • Chest
  • Back
  • Shoulder
  • Face
  • Neck

Keloids can be symptomatic with patients experiencing itching, burning, and pain

Treating Keloids

At Norris Plastic Surgery, we treat keloids using a variety of methods: direct excision, steroids injection, silicone gel sheeting, and radiation. The type of treatment used will be determined based on the information gathered during your consultation. Dr. Norris will carefully examine the area to determine the best treatment option.

Steroid injections – Corticosteroids are a common treatment option for reducing the symptoms of keloids. A series of injections every three to four weeks will be performed which will help to shrink and soften the keloid as well as reduce any symptoms of burning and itching. Often, these injections are initially used in conjunction with other treatments for improved results.

Silicone gel sheeting – A thin sheet of silicone is placed over keloids to place pressure on the keloid which can flatten and prevent keloids from reoccurring. Silicone gel sheets are applied daily for 12 hours and 4-6 wears at a time.

Radiation therapy – Can be used to reduce the size or prevent the reoccurrence of keloids. Often combined with surgery to prevent keloids from returning after surgical removal.

It is important to note that, while these treatment options are effective and can help to significantly reduce the appearance of keloids, the results provided may not be permanent. Keloids can grow back over time. It can take multiple visits to address the issue, and routine care may be necessary to help prevent growth.
