Restoring youthful facial volume has never been easier thanks to solutions like dermal fillers and facial fat grafting. Both of these options offer several benefits. Which one is the right choice for you?

What Is Facial Fat Grafting?

Facial fat grafting involves injecting fat into facial areas that need more volume. This fat is harvested from regions like the patient’s flank, inner thigh, or abdomen through liposuction. Fat is processed in a centrifuge to purify it before injection. Potential treatment areas include the cheeks, temples, upper and lower orbit, area around the mouth, the nasolabial folds, jawline, and chin.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Fillers are synthetic products that restore facial volume. These are made of substances that mimic natural compounds in the body. They typically create instant volume and can be used to address facial depressions and moderate and harsh wrinkles.

Facial Fat Grafting vs. Facial Fillers

Unlike dermal fillers, which are manufactured in a lab, facial fat grafting uses purified fat from the patient. Since the fat injected into the treatment areas does not contain any artificial components, facial fat grafting has a much lower chance of causing allergic reactions.

Facial fat grafting results are permanent, making this option ideal for those who want long-lasting facial rejuvenation. Those who want to add volume temporarily should consider getting a dermal filler treatment instead. Most fillers last for six to 12 months.

It is important to note that the injected fat will take some time to settle in. Once the injected fat has settled, only around 60% of the fat remains. To compensate for this, injectors may temporarily over-fill the area during treatment, after which it will even out naturally.
