Rhinoplasty & Nose Reshaping

Conveniently located to serve Houston & Sugar Land

Rhinoplasty in Houston TX, or nose surgery, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures sought by Houston patients who want to refine their noses and correct unwanted features whether they are caused by genetics, trauma or previous rhinoplasty procedures. There are some medical benefits to a rhinoplasy as well. Correcting a deviated septum or nasal fracture can significantly improve breathing difficulties. Other areas of concern that can be addressed with a rhinoplasty, include:

  • High bridge
  • Low bridge
  • Wide bridge
  • Droopy tip
  • Boxy tip
  • Short tip
  • Over-projecting tip
  • Enlarged nostrils
  • Deviated septum
  • Broken nose
  • Unwanted changes from the previous rhinoplasty

Dr. Norris places special emphasis on ethnic rhinoplasty whereby any over-exaggerated ethnic features are softened without changing the ethnic character of the nose.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Before your rhinoplasty in Houston, Dr. Norris will consult with you to talk about your cosmetic goals and explain what steps he will take to help you achieve them. It is very important to follow all pre-operative instructions, such as discontinuing the use of certain medications for at least two weeks prior to surgery and avoiding alcohol for at least one week.

During the procedure you will be under sedation or general anesthesia, some minor procedures can be done under local anesthesia. Dr. Norris will perform either a closed rhinoplasty with no external incisions or an open rhinoplasty with a small incision in the area between your nostrils called the columella. Depending on your needs, your nasal bones and cartilage will be reshaped and grafts may be used to add volume.

Recovering From Rhinoplasty in Houston

Once your nose surgery is complete, you may be fitted with packing, a nasal bandage, and a splint. Packing can usually be removed the day after surgery, and bandages should be changed as needed. Splints are typically removed within a week of surgery.

Rhinoplasty typically requires about one week of downtime, during which time it is best to sleep with your head elevated. You may gently ice your nose for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling. Exercise or other strenuous activity should also be avoided for at least a week after surgery. Treat your nose delicately after surgery. Routine precautions include avoiding manipulation or bumping your nose and avoiding nasal drops or blowing your nose.

Some crusting, bruising, puffiness, mild bleeding, and discomfort are to be expected but should only last a short time after surgery. Your new nose will begin to take shape within a few weeks of surgery, but it may take several months for the last traces of swelling to resolve.

Dr. Norris will see you periodically during the rhinoplasty recovery period to ensure you are healing properly and seeing your desired outcome.

Other Do’s and Don’ts After Rhinoplasty in Houston

Getting the best results from rhinoplasty comes from great aftercare. Here are more specialized instructions to ensure a healthy and comfortable recovery.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Get plenty of rest and maximize your recovery with time off work.
  • Prepare a cold compress to help reduce swelling.
  • Sleep with your head elevated—you can secure a neck pillow to make sure your newly constructed nose is safe from unwanted contact.
  • Lie down on your back while sleeping, and make sure to gather enough pillows.
  • Stay hydrated—drink at least 2 liters of water per day to reduce swelling.
  • Take your prescribed pain medication as directed.
  • Change your bandage at the recommended intervals, and clean the sutures according to the surgeon’s instructions.
  • Keep your nose clean and moist to minimize post-surgical marks.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments to ensure high-quality results.

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • Postpone heavy workouts like weightlifting for at least four weeks after your rhinoplasty. Long walks can be taken after a week, and light treadmill or stationary bike exercises can be done on the second week.
  • Avoid eating spicy or salty food to prevent excessive swelling.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medication and herbal supplements as directed to reduce bruising.
  • Quit smoking 4 to 6 weeks before and after your rhinoplasty.
  • Stop drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours before and after the procedure.
  • Be careful of facial movements that could stretch or otherwise affect the sutures.

  • Am I a good candidate for this surgery?
Your surgeon will be able to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty during the consultation process. Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty will possess good overall physical and mental health. It is important for you to also have realistic expectations of the benefits and limitations associated with rhinoplasty.
  • Will I experience significant pain?
It is realistic to expect moderate discomfort following rhinoplasty. Due to anesthesia, you will not experience any pain during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience some discomfort for 1-2 weeks. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to ease the discomfort. How long before I can resume normal activities?
In most cases, you should be able to return to work and other daily activities within a week of surgery. Bruising may last for up to two weeks and you may need to wear a nasal splint for several days. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous activity for at least one week.
  • Will I have scars from this procedure?
In most cases, incisions will be made inside the nose, which allows for no visible scarring. Sometimes incisions will be made at the base of the nose. When performed correctly, these incisions should be easily concealed and scarring will fade over time.
  • Are there any alternatives to rhinoplasty?
Although no procedures can mimic the dramatic cosmetic results of rhinoplasty, many patients opt for non-surgical options. Dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Juvederm may be utilized to augment small nasal deformities or irregularities. It is important to note that fillers are not permanent and require regular touch-up treatments.
